Southampton is a village in the southeastern section of Southampton and being part of the colony referred to as The Hamptons. English Puritans first settled the village in 1640 that came from Lynn, Massachusetts. Southampton is the oldest Settlement in the state of New York settled by the English. The earliest colonists were brought to the area by Shinnecock Indians via an old woodland trail. This is where the first homes were built on what is known today as Old Town Pond. The Indians gave the English settlers land to call home as well as taught them how to plant corn, dig clams and scallops, and fertilize the soil with fish. In 1894, the village became incorporated.
Southampton Union Free School District serves the area with 1 elementary school, 1 middle school, and 1 high school. The village has a variety of shops, businesses, services, and restaurants.
The most popular attraction in Southampton is the beaches which include Cooper Beach and 11 other individual beaches. Other attractions include historic sites and museums such as Parrish Art Museum, Thomas Halsey House, Southampton Historical Museum, and Rogers Mansion.
